Quick way to check brew water temp???

Is there a quick (inexpensive) way to tell if the brew temp you have picked on the control panel is what you are actually getting? (assuming you have already warmed the portafilter with blank shots) Obviously I can run a couple of shots of into a preheated shot glass but is that generally a close enough measurement?
I know, close is a relative term. A blacksmith might say- close means you can't get your foot through the hole.

Read on to the part where Wolfgang talks about pulling shots into a styrofoam cup.

You can also use Chas' method, I think he drilled out a single basket to get a good measurement at the PF.
