Coffee Cups Contest

Post by coffeeowl »

...dedicated exclusively to Niko, Illy's cups lover :)

I'd like something like that (and I mean the cup of course)
Couple of questions:
- are the inside-rounded cups better then the not-rounded ones? (for espresso crema I guess)
- are Illy's cups rounded?
How about the cups for cappuccinos and the mugs?
What are your preferences??

EDIT: nonworking link

I prefer a porcelain cup, rounded inside and artwork is a nice bonus. Glass tends to retain heat a little too well for me.
The iLLys are the most elegent cups out there for me and their demanding price tag also says a lot. It's too bad a bunch of good-for-nothing collecters ruin it for everyone.
Don't look at me as one of them...sure I have some of the rarest of them but at least they're not in captivity. I drink from all of them no matter the value.
Life's too short to drink out of ugly cups

My current favorites:
Spirali (1995)
Zebra (1999)

Although I voted for glass with the Bodum dual-walled ones in mind as my favorite, a nice set of porcelain is a close second. I have one such with thin walls that seem not to cool exceptionally quickly albeit faster than the Bodum.

I have admired white porcelain with agressive shapes, and plain shapes with spectacular artwork. But I can't seem to make the move to buy any. It's important to see them, and there aren't very many first person encounters near home.

I'll show you a set by Richard Ginori I scored last weekend for $3/cup. Really nice set with an interesting handle...

Richard Ginori porcelain is one of the really good ones.
iLLy used them for their earlier collections, not sure why they stopped but I suppose it was the cost.

YYeah! Just the kind I had in mind for an agressive shape without other decoration.

...and the price was right!
They were sitting on the shelf in a home goods store for weeks, 2 of the cups were cracked so I bought the other 3 perfect ones.

Just on my birthday I bought these two small Nescafe cups from Yvonne, delivered by her gorgeous daughter :tongue5:
