S1 versus VII

Post by chas »

I have posted several photos side by side of the S1 and the VII which point out key differences. Check it out on the VII Web Site:

Great job!
I love the side by side comparison.
Although the changes are incremental, they are key in improving the S1. Great interior decorating by Spaz to clean up a few things, they did a nice "Spring" cleaning with some of the areas.
Thanks for all your hard work Chas, I know it's not easy to move these 65+lb monoliths back and forth to examine for pictures, etc..

Chas,

I just popped the front panel and top panel off just for a quick look at a couple of things. My S1/VI looks as though it got some of those internal upgrades that the VII's have, the vacuum breaker valve has a cover on it and the chassis has the holes for the drain kit.
I'm going to change my steam boiler sensor this week, I can shoot some pics if you'd like. I'm putting in the new VII upgraded sensor and who knows what other little silent upgrades I might find on my VI after more covers are off. I'm really curious about the controller board now (wether it's sealed or not). My S1 says "2006" on the sticker, just bought it last June so it's definitely one of the last of the original S1's. Can you tell the manufacturing date by serial number?

Based on the internal pictures at this link: http://www.rimpo.org/s1v2/ my V1 also has the valve shield, the enclosed main logic board and as of tonight, it now has the new temperature probe as well. The shield is on the blow-off valve, not the one you hear sputtering on warm up. The one that sputters on warm up is lower-left to the temp probe. As the pressure increases during warm up, it floats up and then seals closed.

The last few weeks have been a major pain with the temp probe. Hopefully the new one will be perfect and the over pressure issue will be gone forever. The old tube extended into the boiler about 3 inches and the new one is barely 1/2" long.

Your machine seems to be a 2006 model, which should be pretty identical to mine.
The new style probe works great, it's much more temp sensitive if you pay attention to it closely - you'll notice the boiler cycling on a lot more.
Another thing that I've noticed with the new sensor is that the boiler pressure doesn't exceed 1.1 bar, but this OK is since it cycles more to keep it up at that power level. So here's what I recommend, trash the 3-hole tip...it's now worthless to me for frothing anything in a pitcher bigger than 12oz. Order the "new" 4-hole tip (ships with the VII's) for about $12.50 from Chris, you'll be doing yourself a favor.
It's nice to be able to scald milk in about 15 seconds...
