The thread was 5/16", a larger bolt than the S1 so I drilled out the threads in the S1 to allow the right size bolt to pass through and put them on. (I removed the side panels to get at the rear legs -Chris better hope that 3 handed guy never retires..) When I reattached the portafilter the machine slid to the side. So a trip to the neighborhood hardware for some thin sticky back furniture leg pads. Problem solved. Now I can very easily wipe under the machine without the back of my hand getting fried or needing to pick up the front of the machine to clean all the way back. Beating the look of the original legs wasn't hard either.
Here is the kicker for me. These "legs" are called stand-offs and are widely available in a variety of lengths, diameters and materials.

Now if I could only find the other name for money that makes it widely available.. would that be a cdo or another instrument of the too big to fail?
