Vacuum Brewer Alternatives to Espresso
Vacuum Brewer Alternatives to Espresso
If you want the best brewed coffee you can make at home buy a Vacuum Brewer like the Hario or Yama. Use a cloth filter instead of paper & spring for the optional butane burner unless you get a stove top model. Another option would be to upgrade your drip brewer to a Technivorm or forget about drip & buy a French Press.

Don't forget the Aerobie Aeropress. It delivers a VERY clean cup at a great price ($35). I have to say that after the Hario Vac and the Eva Solo, it is the one that has impressed the guests the most.JohnB wrote:If you want the best brewed coffee you can make at home buy a Vacuum Brewer like the Hario or Yama. From aeropress web:
"“A couple of years ago I bought a $1500 espresso machine. It works well - but it doesn't turn out the consistent quality of the AeroPress. Now I use the AeroPress for ALL brewing and only use my expensive Italian machine for heating the AeroPress water and for foaming milk for my cappuccino.”

Could anyone tell me the differences between eva solo, aeropress, hario vac and french press? It's possible to obtain a coffee like french press with the Vivaldi?

Aeropress is NOTHING like real espresso. Not even close.oton wrote:From aeropress web:

I would say it tastes like a "cleaner" version of the french press. A little more towards drip. Really, it's a unique taste. I find it quite pleasant, but comparisions are futile.
Wow. That would take a long time. I'd say just buy them all and try. All together they cost about as much as the S1 timer.oton wrote:Could anyone tell me the differences between eva solo, aeropress, hario vac and french press?

Seriously though, there is lots of info on each method on-line. It's a good read.
If you ever visit Montreal, go to the Myriade Cafe. They specialize in brewing with almost "EVERY" brew method known. It's really fun to try them all back to back. Anthony Benda (#3 Barista in Canada in 2007), will brew you some awesome coffee on a Hario Vac using a cool halogen brew lamp that they use in Japan a lot (I've been trying to make one like this). He even delivers it to your table and will give you the whole description of the method and beans in incredible detail (as if you were a judge at the WBC). Very cool!
Just don't ask him and Scott Rao about the Vivaldi (he doesn't like the 53mm basket).
Yes. Put a french press under the hot water dispenser.oton wrote:

This?

i'm reading that the light cost about $500?
lol
I see. So Americanos or Lungos it's not the same as French press.
The "problem" is that I do NOT want to buy a French Press (or aero), began to serve coffee to my guests and they begin to prefer the french press coffee to my $2000 machine.

Yes. Put a french press under the hot water dispenser.Otherwise, the answer is no (pressure and temperatures involved during espresso extraction produce different flavors).

Re: Need Your Help Justifying VII Purchase
Sorry, I'm not an Aeropress fan but then I don't like drip either. I have one gathering dust that I should sell to someone who can appreciate it. It makes "ok" coffee but doesn't come close to a vac pot or press in my opinion. Of course my Chambords have been gathering dust since I bought the two Hario vac pots so I guess I'm spoiled now. The light roasted Ethiopians really shine in the v/p but then what doesn't?Endo wrote:

Yes but a butane burner only costs $30 so if you can live without the pretty light getting into vac pot brewing can be done very reasonably. The alcohol lamp that comes with the v/p is hopeless imo. No heat control & a nice sooty mess to clean up afterwards.

Sorry. I edited my last comment. "i do NOT want" instead of "I do now want".

John, what butane burner are you using? Do you have a link or photo?JohnB wrote:

Chas, can you split this into a topic called "vac pot brewing"? We don't want to get too OT.
