A number of folks have received Vivaldis without the optional timer and found that the pump wouldn't turn on when trying to pull a shot. A specific sequence of front panel lights also flashes. The problem is caused by the fact that CC tests the units with a timer connected before shipment and sometimes forget to flip the timer switch back to the Off position after removing the Timer module.
I asked CC if this might be an undocumented alarm. It turns out to be a "feature". When I wrote the CC version of the Mini II manual, I was sent a copy of the official LaSpaziale manual. In addition to the timer, they also offer a counter. The counter and the timer look almost the same and both plug into the same socket on the controller board. The plugged in device and the controller board do a handshake on power up when the "timer" switch is in the On position so that the controller can tell whether the connected device is the timer or the counter.
The counter option is for commercial use where the shop owner wants a count of the number of shots pulled. I don't know if this is for accounting use or to determine when service is due. However, is is possible to program a number of shots after which the Vivaldi will no longer pull shots when the counter is installed.
The error seen when the Timer switch is on and no device is attached causes the Vivaldi to assume the worst case scenario that the machine is using the Counter module which has failed. Consequently, it will not allow the barista to pull any shots that are not being counted by a working counter device.

MAN !!! I could have used this "one-too-many cutoff" feature on the weekend (serious Naked PF caffeine overdose).chas wrote:The counter option is for commercial use where the shop owner wants a count of the number of shots pulled.
