Genuine LaSpaziale Triple Baskets are here now!
Just saw a new listing at Chris' for a triple basket / naked portafilter.

Is this a new product? Is it actually a triple? Did La Spaziale actually make a triple basket?

Oh.
It must be new. The old bottomless PF offer was:
"LA SPAZIALE fits all commercial La Spaziale machines as well as the Vivaldi S1. Included with the portafilter is a Double La Spaziale Insert Basket."

Re: New Triple Basket / Portafilter on Chris' Coffee?
That's pretty god news. I'll drop Chris an e-mail to see if they have any plans to separately sell the basket.
Update: OK the e-mail to Chris is off. I also noted that when I tried to navigate to the bottomless PF page directly on his website I got to the old page that still shows the LaSpaz bottomless shipping with a double basket. If you click the link provided in this thread you get to the new page with the triple basket. I let him know about this duplication and I bet he resolves it fairly quickly. He is probably shipping them all with the triple now. If you place your order from the page that shows the double basket, I am guessing you'll probably still get the PF w/triple basket. However, to play it safe your best bet is to order it from the correct web page.
To clarify: do NOT order it from this web page - http://www.chriscoffee.com/products/hom ... ortafilter

Re: New Triple Basket / Portafilter on Chris' Coffee?
Here's the info from Chris and the news is good.
I just got 100 triple baskets in yesterday from La Spaziale in Italy I am selling them for $11.95 each. I have 100 portafilter that are on the way from Lino those I will be selling complete portafilter and triple basket $69.95. He had to enlarge the opening at the bottom to accommodate the depth of the triple basket.
Here is the correct section http://www.chriscoffee.com/products/hom ... ortafilter
I am updating the other section now where it is pictured incorrectly.
Lino will open portafilters for people on a direct basis. I will be posting his info soon.
Lino says:
For all the existing customers, you can give them my email address:
lino@vernadesign.com
and a web page: http://www.vernadesign.com/portafilter/

Re: Genuine LaSpaziale Triple Baskets are here now!
How's possible that LaSpaz make triple baskets and not PFs to use them? Specially spouted!! What's the point??
Re: Genuine LaSpaziale Triple Baskets are here now!
Hey! Very cool! Looks like Chris has come through again!
I plan on ordering one this week.
I'm a little sad the PF is the new model without the rubber handle (it won't match the rest of my PFs).
I think I'll send my current naked PF to Lino Verna so he can open it up for $25. It would be great if he included the OEM tripe basket as well so I wouldn't need to order the $11.95 basket seperately from CC and pay $40 shipping.

Re: Genuine LaSpaziale Triple Baskets are here now!
Wow, factory L/S triple baskets! Better check the weather channel & see if Hell froze over!
Since they require opening the older style bottomless P/F I guess we can assume they are REAL triples & will hold 20g or more?? "Almost" makes me nostalgic for my old S1V2.

Re: Genuine LaSpaziale Triple Baskets are here now!
Goto give CC and LaSpaziale credit. They listen and eventully come through.
This is the main reason I bought the S1 and why I still consider it the best machine out there.
Now I'm just waiting for the $100 timer...... and then I'll consider hell officially frozen.

Now, this is f*&ing great news!
The only downfall of the machine has finally been fixed.
This is a date to celebrate.
But I am the greatest. Have got it one month earlier, and it was a bargain. YEA!

Back on topic, I would probably buy one if the shipping cost were not so out of this world for me! The P/F with triple is $60 something, the UPS shipping is $69.00 and to this you have to add the brokerage fee (with UPS, expect it to be above $60...). Too expensive for me.

Yes but for some reason they do seem to like doing it that way. Last time that my order wouldn't fit in an padded envelop they only wanted to UPS it!JohnB wrote:It should fit in a small USPS Priority Mail box which is only $11.50 + ins. to Canada
Maybe I just caught someone on a bad day, but I have read comments by other Canadian on the cost of shipping from CC.
Now that you question this, I'll place the order with the condition that it should be USPS priority mail or cancel and see what happens. Thing is, I need another bottomless and now it comes with a triple... It would be good if it worked out.

Well guys, many spiritual traditions consider there are two types of hell: hot hells and cold hells. So don't speak about hell freezing, it would not bring any good at all.Endo wrote:and then I'll consider hell officially frozen.
On the photo on CC site it loks to be even slightly deeper then the DC triple, or the portafilter is slightly further opened then mine (yet visually it appears to be less then 1mm difference), so it must hold at least 21 grams.JohnB wrote:Since they require opening the older style bottomless P/F I guess we can assume they are REAL triples & will hold 20g or more??

Re: Genuine LaSpaziale Triple Baskets are here now!
the baskets are definitely larger than my existing triples; much more headroom at 20gs and room for more coffee; a clear upgrade from the older triples

Re: Genuine LaSpaziale Triple Baskets are here now!
Pulled a shot from my new triple basket + PF this morning. 18g of Black Cat wasn't enough, will try 19g next. Shot was tasty but too soon for this to be a trend
Note Chris says old bottomless PF won't work with the new basket.

Re: Genuine LaSpaziale Triple Baskets are here now!
As has been stated previously the older bottomless p/fs need to have the cut out opened up so the new triple baskets will fit. Same as we had to do to get the DC triples to fit. You can easily do this yourself with the appropriately sized hole saw in a drill or drill press. Alternatively a cut off wheel on a die grinder will do the job. The ideal solution is to visit a friend that owns a metal lathe with your p/f & a 6 pack of their favorite brew or some home roasted coffee they might enjoy!

Re: Genuine LaSpaziale Triple Baskets are here now!
hey
how are you triple owners collapsing when dosing up? because the bottom of the basket protrudes, it gets knocked upwards when i collapse down.....
dumb question?

Re: Genuine LaSpaziale Triple Baskets are here now!
Since you are tamping in the basket, unless you are applying some kind of pressure on the handle, there is no reason for the basket to come out? Since the pressure is on the basket and the basket is contacting the tamping stand (I assume you have some kind of stand), why would the basket come up. I am not sure to understand...
Are you tapping the P/F down on the counter? I never do that and with the triple basket I do not believe that this is required to fit in more coffee...

Re: Genuine LaSpaziale Triple Baskets are here now!
So how are the triples? Is it worth the $70 in your opinion?
Re: Genuine LaSpaziale Triple Baskets are here now!
That is a question that I cannot answer for you! I have come to accept that all my coffee gears are toys. I could make decent espressos without them. So from this point of view: Yes! It is worth the money.
Another reason, far more practical, is that the triple basket does allow for up dosing above 16 grams which I have already found is beneficial for certain coffees/roast level/age.
Some people claim that they can dose up to 18 grams in the Vivaldi double basket. I never could do that and can't understand how anybody can. For me and my setup, 16.5 grams is the maximum with a firm tamp to stay under the dispersion screen bolt .
Having the ability to dose higher then 16.5 grams is very beneficial to an aged Sumatra (2007) that I roasted (FC+) last week. At dose up to 16.5 grams, it was coming out with strong musty and earthy aroma. Not bad bad but not very pleasant So far, I have found that grounding a bit courser and using 18 grams was making it come out with even more body and sweetness, almost submerging the mustiness and certainly improving the overall impression. These earthy features are still there but with the higher dose they are much more agreeable and even enjoyable. I have not tried a higher dose yet.
With my current daily blend, 50% Brasilia, 25% Colombia and 25% Guatemala, roasted (FC), I still prefer the double basket with a 15.5 grams dose. I tried with 15 to 18 grams and settled on 16.5 for the first shot and 15.5 grams for the following one. I cannot predict when and how a coffee will taste with any dose. I have to try it to know what will come out.
Large doses are not better. But being able to up dose to experiment and occasionally find new and better things is worth the $70.00 US dollars+ shipping to me.
Also, I have not seen any evidence of more or less channeling, or any other extraction defects. To me the triple basket behaves the same way as the double basket with the exception that if the dose is less than 18 grams I have to tamp harder to prevent channelling. Maybe just reducing the pre-infusion would do the same but I have not bothered so far.
All in all, I only had the triple for a short while and have used it sparingly. So take my comments for what they are worth (not much yet).

Yes. Seems like a fun toy !
I'm VERY glad Chris continues to deliver regular upgrades like p/i and the triple to keep us entertained. As I said before, it's one of the main reasons I bought the Vivaldi and why it remains THE BEST machine out there. (Heck, even the GS/3 and Speedster traitors are jealous!)
I'll definitely pick one up next time I'm down at Chris Coffee.

Shipping, in a standard USPS box was $11.95. at my door in about 5 days.
The Box was pristine.
P.S.: Just had a blend 50% Kenya AA (FC) 50% Aged Sumatra (FC+) 16.5 grams. Soooooo smooth and creamy. Just a pleasure to drink.... Just thought that I would share that. Did mentioned the after taste...?

There is not much problem to dose 18 gr. with a lot of coffees, but you must use the thinner dispersion block. Do you have it or do you have the thicker?slo wrote:

Re: Genuine LaSpaziale Triple Baskets are here now!
Whoops!
Since I procured the Vivaldi well after 2007, based on the VI site statement, I have always assumed that I had the thinner block... well it turns out that I evidently have the thicker one!
Well, now I have the thicker block that will hold more heat, hence more thermally stable (better), probably does a better dispersion with the star pattern, then less channeling (better) and I finally can dose up (easily 21+ grams) without the bolt head even touching the coffee surface. In my view I have the best setup possible at this time. Someone corrects me if one, or all, of my assumption is wrong.
So my apologies to everyone that has the thinner dispersion bloc and was able to dose above what I could, I was wrong to imply that you were doing something wrong.

Re: Genuine LaSpaziale Triple Baskets are here now!
Well, I got my newer Vivaldi S1 V2 in last week and you guys may have seen my 'brew head pressure mod' - take a look in the tips tricks if you haven't.
I ordered and received a bottomless with triple basket and an additional basket (just in case!). I haven't, however, had a chance to use it yet as I was calibrating my new Vario. So......
Since many of you guys use a Vario, what is your dose weight for a triple and about how far away on the vario dial is it from your regular double? I have been pulling 15.5 - 16 g doubles and have been using Black Pearl since I requested a sample :-)

Yup, thats right, I am now officially on the dark side. Picked up the phone soon after buying the Speedster & ordered a couple doubles & one triple, all ridgeless, direct from Synesso. Plenty of space under the machine so no need to make adjustable legs fit. Pretty boring these days, nothing to do but make & drink excellent espresso drinks.

ME WANTS A SYNESSO.

Re: Genuine LaSpaziale Triple Baskets are here now!
Me too.
I tried all the biggest name machines. NS Aurelia, La Marzocco, Mirage, Faema, LaCimbali, etc. But the only one that I can honestly say routinely beats my little S1 is the Synesso. I can't figure out what it is. The last one was from a guy who had 2 weeks experience (ouch).
I was considering this one on e-bay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0452217178
But like all $5000+ machines (and even most HX machines), I'm always stopped by the fact that they are just too big for my home purposes (heavy, long warm-up or on all the time, huge boilers, etc). With the Mini, the little 0.45L brew boiler and 1.5L steam boiler with big heaters is an absolutely perfect design for home use.
The only improvement I would make to the S1 would be to add an electrical group head heater and 58mm PF (like on the cheap Bezzera BZ07). Walk-up shots and no more warming flushes.....that would be awesome.
Re: Genuine LaSpaziale Triple Baskets are here now!
Supposed to be a nice machine but not much to look at. Add $500 to the BIN price & you could have a new Speedster.

Re: Genuine LaSpaziale Triple Baskets are here now!
I personally think the shots I've been pulling from the triple are richer & better tasting. But totally subjective. And my dosing is pretty low considering the triple basket, 17-18g otherwise I get too close to the screen, holes & channeling. I was down in the 14-15g range on the double to avoid that issue.
Re: Genuine LaSpaziale Triple Baskets are here now!
After 2 years I'm looking about what I like and not like... shhhh!! This is horrible
I'm think of using the thicker block only as I'm seeing that "new coffees" or "3rd wave" or whatever you call them needs triple doses 20+ to taste as has been designed.
On the other side, I'm brewing classic italian blends, which at 15 grams are fantastic and don't need more up doses; plus my guests prefer them to the ultra acidic new blends.

Tried ordering a triple basket and PF today as a Christmas present. It seems the shipping cost to Montreal has now gone from $11.50 to $31.95
(I guess the small USPS box got smaller?). Just figures. I hate all shippers.
Guess I'll hold off on the triple for a while longer (until my next visit to the US).
