minor channeling
from time to time i get some very small channeling holes where the puck meets the edge of the basket. they generally appear opposite the handle on the portafilter, but also appear elsewhere. their appearance does not seem to be related to whether or not i turn on the preinfusion. i assume this is some problem relating to tamping technique or distribution. any ideas on how to fix

Re: minor channeling
Sometimes a little nutation at the start of the tamp helps better seal the edges. Also, try using the convex tamper and 11mm disk to give yourself a little extra headspace an avoid the screen marks in the puck (or just dose a little less).
It's hard to make a perfect looking puck. You should be looking at the naked pour for signs of channeling. The minor holes on the surface don't always make it all the way through.

Re: minor channeling
exactly that
get good results with the naked, generally use either the flat or convex espro or a thor tamper with the slight convex and have the thinner disc
whats nutation

Re: minor channeling
Good looking naked pours, presumably good taste, but you're concerned about the appearance of the spent puck? My advice: fuggedaboutit and enjoy the espresso. Puckology is overrated.
Re: minor channeling
Nutation:
Grind, dose and distribute as normal. Set the tamper on top but before you tamp, move the handle of the tamper in a circle. Think of a wobbly top before it falls over. This gives emphasis to compressing the edge more than the center. After you are finshed with the 10lb nutation, give it a regular 30 lb tamp and polish.

Re: minor channeling
Here's one of my pucks from this morning. Almost pefect in every way.....funny thing is, the taste was very average. Just goes to show, puckology is definitely over-rated.
