in some of my shots, i notice that the crema fades a bit too quickly; this only happens in the cappa cups ( 5 or 6 oz) and not the smaller espresso cups; the fading generally starts as a cresent at the side of the cup; any similar experiences or thoughts on what causes this to happen 8)

Euh... I'm no pro but if I were you I'd be checking into the temperature of your machine or maybe overdosing...?
Or it may also be the bean's lack of freshness...I mean it can be soooo many things!
