setting the doser buttons

Post by BEAN »

Sorry for the newbi question:

when setting the doser buttons is it necessary to have coffee in the protafiliter or can I just dose out 1.75 oz into a measuring shot. The directions say to use coffee in the portafilter but the crema throws off the measurement?

Second question is that I would like to set the single button so that I can use it for a warm up flush. What quantity of water are people using to acheive this and should it be done before EVERY shot?

Thanks for the help!!!

Welcome to the S1 Cafe, BEAN!

Yes, you do need coffee in the PF to program it correctly.
The warm up shots I use are the same 2-cup button for a double, so you'll be OK using that one when you're finished programming it.

Don't worry about the crema, just keep pouring and cut it when it gets about a 1/4" past the mark. Let the crema settle, look and measure your shot - lock and load again if necessary. You should be able to get it exactly where you want it after a couple of times. It's your personal settings so program what you want it to do.

Niko, when you say don't worry about the crema, do you mean don't worry about the crema and include it in the measurement, or do you mean don't worry and don't include it in the measurement?

I guess my question is are you saying measure the top of the crema 1/4" past the double-shot mark, then let it settle and see how close it came?

I'm going through this right now, too.

Yes :thumbleft:
That's a great starting point.

Cool, thanks.

I'm hoping to get my shot volume programmed, and then use the length of time it takes to produce the shot to tweak my grinder back into the ballpark.

I did something that I now know was a stupid move - once I got everything set up I went crazy turning dials and pressing buttons and generally enjoying the new toys and they're pretty far away from "dialed in". So I'm looking for a methodical way to dial it all in, and it seems like accurate shot volume could be a key to it.
