While pulling a 2oz warming shot I see the temperature drop 17F,
When I pull my espresso shot the drop is less, ~9F.
The temp is from the readout on the Dream display.
Is this amount of drop normal?
Do I have a problem?
Is there something I should be doing differently?
thanks

Re: Temp Drop
You mean you see the LED lights displaying the temp drop when you pull your shots? yes that is normal.
The way this manages temps is to get the water in the boiler much hotter than you want and then as it flows thru all that brass of the grouphead, the water cools down and hopefully ends up hitting the coffee at the desired temp. The LED temp lights are reading the temp of the water inside the boiler and when you start your shot, the pump starts pumping cold water into the boiler. So, of course, that is why the LED lights show the temp dropping --- the LED lights are reading the cold water being pumped into the boiler and are really only meant to tell you when that cold water has been heated back up again.
Hope that makes sense --- the LEDs just give you an indication that the boiler is at the starting temp you set. They don't tell you anything at all about the temp of the water hitting the coffee in the portafilter.

Re: Temp Drop
yes that is what I expected.
My question is on the difference between pulling an empty warming shot - with a big temp drop
vs pulling a real shot with nearly 1/2 the temp drop of the warming shot.
why is there such a difference?

Re: Temp Drop
Took a while but I finally realized what was happening. I was pulling warming shots manually based on time not weight. Therefore with no puck in the basket, the flow was greater. Pulling more water resulted in the bigger temp drop.
So now by weight it's all consistent.
