RESOLVED- brew buttons not working after brewed heater element repair

Hi
Update -- for some reason it worked fine on the second power up!
I am new to machine maintenance.
We have a 12 year old mini vivaldi ii and just replaced the heater element and gasket in the brew head. It has been out of operation for 1.5 years. After replacing the element, it powered up fine, and the steam boiler worked ok. However, the brewed leaked in the back a little (a few drops) and the brew buttons did not dispense any water.
Any suggestions?
+ looking for tips on how to tighten the heating element collar enough. Do I need teflon tape?
+ Any idea what to look at for why the brew buttons aren't delivering water? Is it possible we knocked a connection loose somewhere?
