video confusion

Post by paulfl »

In the Chris' coffee video for the mini, they say the difference between the 15 and 20 amp versions is that on the 15, you cannot steam and brew at the same time. In the seattle coffee gear video they say you can do both with either machine? Does anyone know what the truth is? Could it be you CAN do both with either machine but would not want to with the 15 amp version, or it is not recommended?

I don't remember that comment in the Chris Coffee video. Do you have the title of the video and time where they say that so I can check?

In any case, I can tell you there is not difference between the Mini and regular S1 when in 15A or 20A mode. The 15 mode simply means only one boiler can be on at a time. In 20A, both can be on at the same time.

In 15A mode, the brew boiler always gets priority, so if you start to steam and the steam boiler temp gets low, the steam boiler heater may not come on until the brew boiler finishes heating. This is only about 5 second delay, so you'll probably never even notice. I leave mine in 15A mode since I've never really needed 20A and I like having the option of moving my machine to another regular 15A outlet in the house if need be.

If you are in a commercial environment and running back-to-back milk drinks, you may find you need the 20A, but in the home doing 1 or 2 drinks at a time, it's not needed.

here is the seattle coffee gear video

here is the Chris' video

so what you are saying is you could but you might not want to cause of the temp, etc?

Try listening to the Chris video again between 4:27 and 5:15. He explains how the steam boiler gets priority in 15A mode, but he does not say you can't steam.

As he says, there is "no noticeable difference in home use" between 15A and 20A mode.

The steaming is something completely physical. It doesn't need electricity (to steaming, not to heat the water to produce pressure inside the boiler, of course). Even you can steam with the machine turn it off as long as you have pressure in the boiler.

To risk beating the dead horse...I'm on 15A & I pull shots while I'm steaming all the time.

Thanks for beating a dead horse Bob, I love your Neumann head avatar. It's like you won't know what you get until you get there, my Jura has trouble steaming less than adequately so I'm worried about getting another machine that has trouble steaming, or won't brew at proper temperature. I wrongly assumed my Jura would produce froth and temp like similar manual machines in the price point. Like thinking a Royer mic could stand up against a U49 if you are into microphone analogies.

Don't worry about steam power. If you're like most people, for the first few months you'll be painting the walls with milk. The Vivaldi is that powerful !

(Note: Don't bother trying to reduce the steam power on the Mini like in this second video. It's either on or off. Just flip it up and get both hands on that pitcher.)

Thanks Endo, when I was up at Chris' Coffee I told Mary, rather than purge my wand, shut it off, put the milk under it, and turn it back on, I purge my wand and when the steam begins, rush my pitcher under it, I kinda enjoy having it go all over the place, but the mini might have a little more power than my Jura, even more fun.......

Ah...but I really like my SF-24!

Certainly not a U49, though.

Glad you like the KU-100 avatar...her name is Frau Blücher.
