Cup Blockage?
Cup Blockage?
Anyone measured the internal temperature with and without cups on top? Since the top seems to be the only way to convect away heat, I'm a little reluctant to block all the vent holes with cups. (Call me paranoid).
Re: Cup Blockage?
I think porcelain cups act as a heat sink, they absorb all the heat and dissipate up into the air. So it's probably a good idea to put a few cups on the warmer.
I usually have about 16-20 cups on mine, 16 espresso and 4 Cappas - mostly porcelain, sometimes glass Illy's. I always cover them with a doubled over towel to hold the heat on the cups to the point of blistering lips if you touch them
Me afraid of heat, no way! I like the machine super hot inside out

You guys are nuts....amazingly informative, but nuts.
Thanks again, I'll keep working on a question you can't answer.

Re: Cup Blockage?
I think the bottom line is that, when you put a towel on top of the cups there are plenty of gaps around the edges of the towel so that there is plenty of convective cooling flow for the machine. However, the towel insulates the cups and prevents them from re-radiating much of the heat they absorb.
I was surprised when I took the measurements. I had hoped that the internal rise wouldn't scare me off from using a towel since it works so well. However, I had expected to see significantly more temperature rise than there ends up being.

Thanks. I imagined the stack might be a bit higher. His Capo cups must be skinnier then mind if all that fits so neatly.chas wrote:Niko posted a photo on this forum about 18 months ago.
