Re: HOWTO: Installing a power-on timer on your S1 (Request)
That's a great idea, being able to control the steam boiler. @bgour, I was going to ask if you had to do some fancy signal taming reading the magnetic reed switch? I've had some trouble getting a reliable method of measuring it. I'm currently sending an interrupt on "change" and then readi...

Looks good to me. Does it respond well? I see you have four optocouplers, what things are you sensing/controlling with them? I have three: group solenoid, power (across a control panel LED) and the third for power on/off. It would be nice to add a pre-infusion but haven't put much thought into it yet.

That looks remarkably similar to my own setup: OLED in the same corner of the cup tray; main control unit in a black box sitting in the same contour of the rear of the machine with wires going into the machine from there. But I have to say, yours looks much cleaner and more organized and I'm just us...

I'm using the "Econ" LED since it's always on while powered up (at least in my case).
Interesting about the PWM - I didn't check for anything but DC but will next time I'm in there.

I have my Insteon I/O Linc timer working fairly reliably now, but sometimes my S1 fails to turn on or off (due to some interference with my I/O Linc). I’d like to have the ability to detect the on/off state of the S1 in order to mitigate this issue. The I/O Linc has a sense function which I think c...

BTW, I pulled the group solenoid signal directly from the relay on the control board. Going directly to the solenoid would have been a better idea :banghead: In any case, if anyone else has a need the pins under the marked relay will do it. Keep in mind this is an S1V1 board - I'm not sure how much ...

Yet another version: v1.png v2.png Displays "Time Up" when no active shot. Shot time remains for 45 seconds after the shot has ended. If shot was less than 12 seconds (as with a flush) I don't count it and immediately clear the shot time. Shot counts are on the bottom line. I like it so fa...

Great! Actually I like where you have it currently - were you planning on a deeper integration?
I'm inspired. I have some small oled screens sitting around so maybe I'll add one to my setup along with a shot sensor line.

Sounds good. I like the shot timer idea - beats having a dedicated timer/stopwatch. Even a shot counter would be useful - as a maintenance/cleaning reminder. Figure I'm at 15,000 shots by now and knock on wood, very few issues.

Very nice! Are you pulling signals from the button/display board only or are you on the mainboard? I have a somewhat similar ESP8266 based solution (as documented by TruthBrew a few posts above) which is essentially a button-presser and a bit more to sense power state. I would love to add temperatur...

I'm using the the simulated button press approach (ESP8266/GoogleAssistant, as documented by TruthBrew here: http://s1cafe.com/viewtopic.php?p=25499#p25499 ) But, I would love to tap into the serial interface especially if it offers more than just on/off and counts (temps for example). I've had this problem too, twice in the ten years I've had my S1. On both occasions the level sensor looked absolutely fine but after a clean and reinstall all was well again. Thanks, Chas. I adjusted the expansion valve and took the opportunity to clean it out. Not bad but a bit of crud in there coating everything. Brew Pressure Sometimes Gets Very High
Hi All, S1V1 (rotary pump) During the course of some regular maintenance today I noticed an odd behaviour. Checking the brew pressure (with a portafilter pressure gauge) the pressure gets to about 130 psi. Most of the time it remains at that pressure but sometimes after a few seconds stable at 130 p...

Resolved. After a bit more reading here about water level sensor problems I realized that mine was indeed too high. It was fairly loose so no surprise. Amazing what a difference 5-10 mm makes. Thanks. So I took a look at the water level sensor probe and it didn't look as though it had ridden up. I removed it and it was fairly clean but for perhaps a thin film of minerals. I cleaned it off, re-installed, fired it up and got the same results: heating followed by sputtering from the vacuum b...

I think this is a different issue than what I originally thought. Despite being fully up to temp/pressure, the steam wand releases mostly liquid. I can fill a 20 oz. pitcher with it. Almost as if the boiler is way overfilled. And it might be my imagination but it seems to cycle refills more frequent...

The needle sits far from zero when cold, in fact only about a half bar from the very end. When it reaches what I think is normal pressure, it's already pegged. So, definitely time for a new gauge. Re: Steam Boiler Overheating
I woke up this morning to discover my V1 steam pressure gauge pegged on the high side, about 3.25 bar. (!) I shut the machine off and found that the gauge went down only slightly, so it's likely been damaged at this point. Gauge aside, I continued trying to figure out what caused this. From cold, th...

FWIW, here is my Rube Goldberg timer solution: Digital appliance timer, with a 12v power adapter plugged into it. Re: What should I do to my S1V1?
What V2 features are you particularly interested in? If it's the "tighter temperature control" you can upgrade the the newer temp probes. This was done to my S1V1 by its previous owner. If it's pre-infusion you're after you could add the chamber solution. $600 is a lot to spend, imho, espe...

Re: does your S1 make this sound?
I assume it's the sound of flow through the pump bypass restrictor when the pressure exceeds the 9 bar set point? No? Might be, although it happens with no pressure at the grouphead. In fact, it doesn't happen at all with a blind filter in place which is another clue. Also, on first run it takes ab...

I have the exact same "whoosh" sound which has been there the whole time I've owned my S1V1 (2+ years).
I wouldn't worry about it though it though I'm curious to know what it is.

Note also that the common 30lb tamp for a 58mm basket equals 25lb in the Vivaldi's 53mm basket (approx 80% of the area, therefore 80% the force).

Do you tamp with the basket in the portafilter? My guess is that your tamp is biasing to one side.
I often get the same thing, despite consciously trying to apply even pressure. Some nutation helps.
Good luck!

Re: Day 1 - Aside from the air-raid siren, pretty good ...
The cause of the siren-sound is proximity to the round chassis holes. The cheap fan doesn't help, but it's the airflow through these holes that makes and/or accentuates the noise. With skepticism I modded mine with a rubber spacer and it was very effective. I can still hear the fan but it's very qui...

Re: Expansion value and pressure setting help
I'm not sure I can explain it, but it's normal behavior with a PF Pressure Gauge. If you remove the PF and run a shot into the blind basket to fill it up, lock in the PF, then run another shot this behavior is less likely to happen than if you lock in the PF filled with air. So it seems like maybe ...

Re: Expansion value and pressure setting help
The rotary pump has a built-in pressure bypass valve. (Actually the V2 Mini also has a pressure bypass valve, a rarity for vibe pump machines.) Should that fail, that's what the expansion valve is there to protect you from. It's not like most of the vibe pump HX machines where the pump will actual ...

In my case it dripped for some time before clogging up the drain hole with corrosion. In some cases it might clog before having much chance to leave a drip mark so lack of drip marks aren't a guaranty that the pump seal isn't leaking.
YMMV but if you see drip marks, you have a leak.

The first and probably the toughest part of making this mod is to get into the keypad panel housing (small plastic box) and solder wires to pins 1&6 which are the on/off button (actually, 1 is ground and 6 is the on/off line). I initially used the toggle switch solution described by JonW above s...

Method #1 - Plug in timer control If you wish to simply use a plug in timer, you can wire a toggle switch between pins 1 & 6. You can then leave the toggle switch turned on and when the timer comes on, the machine will think that the power button is being pressed. Normally, you wouldn't hold th...
