Re: 5 years w/o descaling?

Yes, I mean running water out of the hot water spout. I run some water out of the spout to heat my cups every time I make a shot. In addition I use the hot water spout to fill the pitcher when I soak my portafilter, baskets and dispersion screens in Cafiza.

Re: 5 years w/o descaling?

It is possible that the boiler is just fine. It all depends on how it has been used. If the water was always softened and the owner flushed water from the steam boiler regularly it could be fine. My VII seven years old, has always been run using the CC softener system and the brew boiler has never b...

Re: Full drip tray on startup?

The only time I had anything close to this happen my problem was solved with a good hard Cafiza backflush cycle. The problem seemed to be that my OPV (I may be using the incorrect name for this valve) was not sealing completely causing a persistent drip that was filling the drip tray.

Re: Extraction favors near side of portafilter

I think that Chas was
1. suggesting that you check to see if the top lip of the basket is flat.
2. suggesting that you check for uneven tamping or other basket loading effects by turning the portafilter before you tamp (effectively doing what you did by rotating the basket).

Good luck

Re: Air out of group?

My S1 Version 2 has been in use since April 2007 and I have never descaled the group boiler (the steam boiler has been descaled multiple times). Since water is constantly flowing through the group and the group boiler does not boil the water to make steam scaling should be limited (or so I reason). ...

Many individuals here have been using these cartridges for years. I started buying them in 2007. The reason for building your softening system with generic parts (as sold by Chris' Coffee where I originally bought mine) is that you can get cartridges from many sources at reasonable prices.

First, my advice would be to worry about taste and not the quantitative details of your routine. With that said I don't weigh my coffee but rather use a single basket worth of beans for a double shot. This gives me a mound of coffee that is just flat at the top of the basket after I level with my fi...

I agree; the major scale issue is in the steam boiler where you are concentrating the minerals when you boil the water to make the steam. I pull some water from the hot water tap every day when I start in the morning. The brew boiler is a closed system that is never boiled and where water is being p...

It is only necessary to put a single GFI onto each circuit. All outlets that are past that GFI on the circuit are protected. Presumably the outlet that does not work is "past" one of the GFIs and not working because the GFI has tripped.

Never presume that you will remember to put it back correctly when you leave. There is no reason to generate a potentially dangerous situation where you have inappropriate fixtures on a circuit. If you are going to run only in 15A mode just put a 15A plug onto your Vivaldi cord and be done with it. ...

Re: Super Important Question

It is potentially dangerous, illegal and not a good idea to do what you are suggesting. Installing a 20A outlet on a 15A circuit sets up a situation where someone would plug in a device that will overload the wiring potentially causing at the least a fuse or breaker to blow and at the worst a fire. ...

I have always run my Vivaldi in 20A mode so I can't speak to 15A mode at all. I anticipate that the machine heats up faster in 20A mode since both elements can operate at the same time. If all of your kitchen outlets are on a single 20A circuit you could generate an overload in 20A mode with the Vivaldi if numerous other loads were active when the Vivaldi was drawing maximum power (i.e. when both boilers are heating at the same time and the pump was running). Volumetric dosing is measuring water flow, not time. You have to balance grind, tamp pressure and water flow to achieve the desired time for your shot. I started out with a very large volume set so that I could adjust my tamp and grind while stopping the shots manually. After I had a grind and tamp ...

Yes, over time the hot water solenoid valve can (does) become scaled. In my case this resulted in a great reduction in flow while in yours it resulted in the valve failing to close fully. Either way it seems common to expect to need to take the valve apart and soak in white vinegar to clean it up.

After removing the screens and dispersion disk I have always been able to pop out the gasket with a butter knife or screw driver. You can always thread a self-tapping screw into it and then grab the screw with a pair of vise grip pliers if you need that kind of force.
